AFTERNOON TEA AT THE REGENT BERLIN
British tradition celebrated by the hotel’s very own Tea Master
The British afternoon tea tradition is several centuries old and all occasions (from every day routines to special celebrations as well as any crisis great and small) deserve to be accompanied by a cup of tea. At the Regent Berlin, tea enthusiasts are expertly looked after and pampered by Roland Pröh, the Tea Master for the 5-star superior hotel, who welcomes his guests with competence and friendly professionalism.
It’s tea time: Every day from 2pm onwards, Roland Pröh, a certified Tea Master Gold (awarded with this title by the renowned tea company Ronnefeldt), proves his vast knowledge and skills in the hotel’s lobby lounge. He takes pride in matching the right tea to a guest’s preferences and tastes and then prepares the chosen tea to perfection. “We only use loose leafed teas of the highest quality from reputed companies such as Mariage Frères, Ronnefeldt or Fortnum & Mason”, explains the expert, who can recognise most teas only by their taste. Pröh, who has created his very own tea blend, continues by saying “Our guests are encouraged to smell the different teas before making a decision.” Preparing tea is an art form requiring the water to have the ideal temperature, which varies depending on the type of tea, as well as the exact brewing time. Only then will the tea have developed its unique bouquet, fine taste nuances and either its invigorating or calming effect. At the Regent Berlin, guests can choose from a selection of 35 different kinds of tea.
The lobby lounge, with its comfortable regency style armchairs, leather sofas in front of an open fireplace and soothing piano music, is an ideal place to escape the everyday hustle and bustle of the capital. To accompany the tea, Roland Pröh serves delicious cucumber-, salmon- and egg-sandwiches on elegantly tiered étagères. These are followed by the traditional British scones with homemade strawberry jam and original clotted cream as well as tarts. Surely the ambience, service and afternoon tea would receive royal approval? To make the experience even more special, try Tea Master Pröh’s own creation: The ‘Meissner Rose’, a Chinese green tea with dried grapes from Meissner vineyards and rosebuds.
Every year, Roland Pröh can be found at sea on Germany’s most sought after cruise liners: the MS Europa and MS Europa II. Here, Pröh shares his knowledge with other tea lovers during exclusive tea seminars and, depending on the route he also accompanies guests to various tea plantations.
